About the place -
Matheran became the popular summer retreat when in 1907 a quaint toy train from Neral made its first ascend to the top. Its air is pure and trails are free of vehicular traffic as the road from Neral terminates to Dasturi Naka and the only way to explore the top is by foot or on horseback.
The plateau extends over 7.4 sq km and reaches the elevation of 803 meters. The vegetation of Matheran transforms dramatically from near barren plains and open deciduous forests to the dense semi evergreen and evergreen jungles dominated by Jamun, Anjan, Indian Medlar and Kokam.
Matheran is the closest natural site to resound the rattling cries of the colourful Indian Giant Squirrel. Matheran is a haunt of forest birds like drongos, bulbuls, babblers, flycatchers and thrushes. It is also home to the highly elusive Small Indian Civet, Rusty Spotted Cat and Striped Hyena.
Hill forts like Chanderi, Malanggad, Peb can be seen at the North while Prabalgad, Irshal, Manikgad and Karnala stands to the southwest.

Tour Itinerary
- Meet at Dadar (Central) Railway Station at Platform 4 at 5:50 am sharp
- Travel by train leaving Dadar at 5:59 hrs
- Reach Neral and have Breakfast at 7:50 hrs
- Transfer to Matheran by local jeep
- Introduction and Instructions at 8:30 hrs
- Start the guided nature trail in Matheran
- Lunch and rest by 12:30 hrs
- Start walking towards Dasturi Naka
- Snacks and Tea
- Travel back by Local jeep
- Reach Neral Station by 16:00 hrs (approx)
- Reach Mumbai by 18:30 Hrs
One can choose to reach Matheran by their own vehicle.

Rules to be followed
Few rules that we would like people to follow -
- Consumption of alcohol, smoking, drugs, narcotics is strictly not allowed and would lead to expulsion from the trek.
- Leader's decision will be final and binding to all members. No arguments will be entertained.
- Each member is responsible for their own safety and baggage.
- Please do not wear any jewellery or gold ornaments.
- Please do not litter. Do not throw plastic, paper, wrappers, bottles etc. Carry them home to throw in the dustbin.
- We strongly believe in saying - Wherever we go, leave only footprints and take back only memories.
