About the place -

Madhya Pradesh is rich in heritage and boasts a number of sights displaying the architectural marvels of bygone era. A visit to these heritage treasures of Madhya Pradesh can be a great way to soak oneself in the glorious past and prosperous culture. Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh and monuments around the city attract the attention of history buffs and architecture admirers from all over the country.

Sanchi - The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the most important Buddhist monuments reflecting gem of Buddhist art and architecture, located at Sanchi Town in Madhya Pradesh, India. This Stupa is the oldest stone structure in India that was built during the Mauryan period. Originally commissioned in the third century BCE by Emperor Ashok this huge hemispherical dome with a height of 12 m (54.0 ft) consists of a central chamber where the relics of Lord Buddha are placed. Four ornamental gateways facing four directions and a balustrade surrounding the Stupa were later added in the first century BCE. Enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989, it is counted among the best conserved ancient Stupas of central India.

BhimbetkaThe Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site in central India that spans the prehistoric Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods, as well as the historic period. It exhibits the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent and evidence of Stone Age starting at the site in Acheulian times. It is a UNESCO world heritage site that consists of seven hills and over 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 kilometers. The rock shelters and caves provide evidence of a "rare glimpse" into human settlement and cultural evolution from hunter-gatherers, to agriculture, and expressions of spirituality.

Udayagiri Caves - Located near Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, India, are a remarkable group of rock-cut caves dating back to the 4th-5th centuries CE. These caves are notable for their historical and religious significance, showcasing a blend of Jain and Hindu influences. Carved into a sandstone hill, the Udayagiri Caves are renowned for their intricate carvings and sculptures. One of the most famous caves, Cave 1, features a large statue of the Hindu deity Vishnu in his Varaha (boar) avatar, depicting his rescue of the Earth from the demon Hiranyaksha. The Udayagiri Caves are considered an important example of early Indian rock-cut architecture and provide valuable insights into the art, culture, and religious practices of ancient India. The site’s peaceful surroundings and historical significance make it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and tourists alike.

The Tribal Museum - The Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum in Bhopal takes you on an immersive journey through the culture of the local tribes of the state. With large colourful displays, the museum shows the art, traditions, daily life, and customs of a large number of indigenous groups.
The Tribal Life Gallery has full-sized models of the tribes’ houses and dwellings, large enough for visitors to go inside. In another gallery, stories of worship and sacrifice are portrayed through impressive art installations. Artefacts from daily life are presented alongside cultural symbols that contain deep meanings passed through the generations. The museum has a particular focus on tribal art and how it relates to the culture. A musical instrument, for example, is also a part of an important ritual. A sculpture is also a tribute to a god or spiritual energy. For the tribes, everything is related to an invisible power and items are both practical and supernatural at the same time. There is a lot to see at the Tribal Museum and the exhibitions are full of artefacts and information. It is one of the best museums in India and certainly worth a visit.
